Library

Our library belongs to the students of the school. We hope that they will find it to be a peaceful, well-ordered and inviting place, where they may come to read, think and write. It is our aim to create a sanctuary for study, offering a wide selection of paper and online publications for all ages.

Most of our books are in English as that is the school’s main language, and we also have a wide selection of books in Swedish, the host country’s language. A smaller selection of ‘mother-tongue’ fiction books in other languages is also available. Our books may be enjoyed in the library at any time during the school day, or borrowed to read at leisure at home.

Library sessions each week

Pre-school and PYP classes visit the library with their teacher for a 30-minute library session each week. Our structured library programme includes readings of poetry or fiction, examination of non-fiction books and related unit of inquiry topics, library orientation, or discussion of issues arising from carefully chosen texts. Students also use this time to browse, exchange or renew their books.

MYP1-4 students are responsible for visiting the library independently, and are welcome at any time during the school day. They should note that no PYP classes are scheduled during MYP breaks, lunchtime, and after school on Monday and Thursday, and the library is theirs to enjoy at these times. Sessions in library orientation, referencing and citation are hosted by Mrs Abeln for MYP1-4 in IB Core lessons.

MYP5 and DP students may also use the library at the ISH Petri building in addition to the one at ISH Nicolai and get research help in the Nicolai Book Storage Room on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings.

Helpful library assistants

Your library assistants (Sally Russell, Kira Abeln and Kate Henzell-Thomas) will always welcome you, and do their best to help put the right book in the right hand at the right moment. The library assistants work closely with the teachers so that they are informed about what each year group is learning about.

Please see the ‘useful links’ section for a variety of online fiction research and information resources, including the Mandarin Oasis link which allows anyone to search for books held in the ISH Petri Library.

If you would like to make a financial donation to the ISH library, please contact the Parent Teacher Association at ishpta@hotmail.com – your contributions are always greatly appreciated. Likewise, donations of second-hand books in good condition are also very welcome.
